AMP Required Gear List


General Gear

AMP is a mountaineering course and as such the following is needed for every class.
  • A pack to carry all your gear + 10 essentials (you will be spending an extended amount of time away from camp)
  • Sturdy footwear: hiking boots or approach shoes. No trail running shoe, sandals, crocs, or other similar open toed shoes.


Required Climbing Gear 

(All required climbing gear for the class must be UIAA certified)


Most students find they spend in the range of $350-400 for all of the required gear assuming you're starting from scratch. Costs can vary depending on where you shop and there are a lot of savings to be found online but please take into account shipping time and make sure to have them by the required class.

Climbing Harness 

Since proper sizing is important, we recommend you get it fitted in the stores (REI, Sports Basement, Nomad Ventures, Gear Coop, etc.)

Optional But Recommended

Rock climbing shoes or approach shoes

Most of the top rope climbs you'll be doing during the class will require something more than shoes or boots. If you get climbing shoes, make sure they're comfortable to be in for an extended period of time. While they can be bought online, it's usually better to shop locally so you can find the right fit.
