To Grigri or not to Grigri
The Petzl grigri is very popular today for making a climbing belay.  Guides are using it, gyms are using it and it is a pretty good device if used properly.  AMP will not teach belay using the grigri.  At this time we only teach belay using the ATC (aka Air Traffic Control) device.  The reason is simple, we want the belayer to understand that you must always have the brake hand engaged for safety.  Primary belay rule: ALWAYS hold the brake strand of the rope.  With the grigri, some climbers feel that the brake hand is optional or that it will catch the fall automatically.  The simplicity of the ATC makes it an ideal belay device.  The grigri takes some time to understand and use.  Plus it weighs a ton and who wants to drag that device into the mountains.  Make sure to see the Hard is Easy video link above.
